We measured it

What “51% off” actually means on Amazon

We compared the struck-through MRP against the price the product has really been selling at, across 407 tracked Amazon listings. On the median listing the MRP sits 103% above its own typical price — so at a completely ordinary price, the badge already reads about 51% off.

Median MRP above the typical selling price
103%
Listings whose MRP is at least double the typical price
54%
The “off” badge shown at that ordinary price
51%
Median discount of a live deal against its own recorded high
32%

Those last two numbers are the point. Measured against MRP, a typical Amazon listing looks 51% off. Measured against what the product has actually cost on Amazon, the deals we are tracking right now sit a median of 32% below their own recorded high. The second number is the one worth acting on.

The full bar is the MRP. The filled part is the median price this product has actually sold at over the last year. Open any of them to check the timeline yourself.

How we measured this

For each tracked listing we take the median of every selling price we recorded for it over the last 365 days — its typical price — and compare that against the MRP shown on the listing. Only listings with at least five recorded prices in that window are counted, so a 'typical price' always rests on several observations. We report the median across listings, because a handful of extreme MRPs would drag a mean upwards.

The result barely moves when the evidence bar is raised: requiring three, five, eight or fifteen recorded prices shifts the median by a few points either way, so the figure is not an artefact of which listings we happen to sample often.

Worth knowing: These are listings that have surfaced in our deal feeds, not a random sample of each store's full catalogue, so they over-represent products that get discounted. A high MRP is also not by itself dishonest — it is the manufacturer's list price, and stores are entitled to show it. The point is narrower: the '% off' badge is calculated from that number rather than from any price the product has recently sold at. For the record, 7 of the 407 listings we checked had an MRP at or below their typical price.

Amazon Price History — FAQs

Common questions about tracking Amazon prices in India.

How can I see Amazon price history in India?

Paste the Amazon.in product URL into the Price History search bar. We'll show you a full chart of how the price has changed over the last 365 days, including every markup and markdown. You can also download our app to track prices on the go.

Is the MRP shown on Amazon listings real?

It is the manufacturer's list price, and it usually sits well above what the product actually sells for. We compared 407 tracked Amazon India listings against their own recorded history: the median MRP sits 103% above the product's typical selling price over the last year, and 54% of listings carry an MRP at least double their typical price. So a listing at a completely ordinary price already shows around 51% off. Displaying MRP is legitimate — the point is that the '% off' badge measures distance from that list price, not from any price the product recently sold at. The price chart shows what it has really been selling for.

Does Amazon raise prices before the Great Indian Festival sale?

Some listings do, but it is not the rule. We checked 142 tracked Amazon India products through the last two Great Indian Festival sales: 20% were selling above their previous month's price in the run-up, with a median markup of around 9%. For 73% the lowest sale price genuinely beat the pre-sale price. If you see a sharp step up before the sale date, the discount is being measured from that higher price — our chart makes that visible.

How often does Price History update Amazon prices?

We crawl Amazon India multiple times daily. For products you've set alerts on, we check even more frequently. Flash sales and lightning deals may change within minutes, so we recommend enabling push notifications for your most-watched items.

Is Price History free to use for Amazon price tracking?

Yes — 100% free. You can search any Amazon product, view the full price history chart, and set up to 10 price drop alerts without paying anything. Our app on iOS and Android is also free.

What is the lowest Amazon price for iPhones in India?

iPhone prices on Amazon India fluctuate significantly. The all-time low often occurs during Prime Day or the Great Indian Festival. Use Price History to track your specific iPhone model and see its historical low — we show the exact date and price for every record low in our database.

Can I track Amazon seller prices, not just the main listing?

We track the buy-box price — the price you'd actually pay when clicking 'Add to Cart'. If a third-party seller undercuts Amazon's own price and wins the buy box, that price is reflected in our chart.
